Two trades, one clause.
A STUNT DOUBLE and a GHOSTWRITER sign the same clause: someone else keeps the name. The double's body takes the fall so someone else can stand still and take the bow. Read the author's contract and you'll find much the same deal.
TSW —a different name every time someone asks— has spent his career, and his colleagues', doing both jobs at once. One person underneath another. Wide awake, he risks his life against time, for or against his own present. But he doesn't leave it to a coin toss.
The stunt's body and the author's are hired for one thing only: the risk, for a limited time. The author knows that trade leaves marks. He prefers eternity — he knows his own will by heart. It isn't the same clock as the athlete's, the one who wakes up one day to find his time has finally come looking for him. It looks the same. It isn't.
Fifteen contracts already signed. He doesn't choose the order. Every clause reshuffles the triangle: who chooses, who hires, who's left out. The rewards are substantial.
You can't train someone else's body. Some people pull back at the edge, while others stretch that thin line without falling on its blade. They were raised there. On set, they risk the body so the star keeps the stunt. In writing, they risk authorship so the client keeps the words.
